Shehara Sandaruwan built a massive fanbase entirely through independent music releases on platforms like Desawana Music, YouTube and TikTok - with no label support.
When record labels repeatedly rejected her demos, Shehara Sandaruwan decided to go independent. What happened next became one of the most inspiring stories in modern Sinhala music.
Armed with only a laptop, a budget microphone and her voice, Shehara recorded and mixed her own songs at home. She uploaded them to Desawana Music, YouTube and TikTok. The response was overwhelming.
Her song 'Tikiriliya' went viral on TikTok with thousands of duet videos. 'Ukula Sala' crossed 170,000 downloads on Desawana Music in under 6 months. All without a single rupee from a record label.
Today, Shehara has 100,000+ social media followers, performs at sold-out shows and still remains independent. 'I wanted to prove that talent doesn't need a gatekeeper,' she says. 'If your music is good, people will find it.'
