The young rap collective Spade Squad talks about their unique sound, their record deal and what it means to rap in Sinhala in 2025.
DM: Congratulations on your record deal! How does it feel?
Spade Squad: Unreal honestly. When we started making music in our bedroom a few years ago, we never thought we'd be signing with a major label.
DM: 'Selawena Manasa' went viral on TikTok. Were you surprised?
SS: Very! We made that track in one afternoon. Sometimes the most spontaneous ones connect the most.
DM: What's the biggest challenge rapping in Sinhala?
SS: People used to think Sinhala rap was not 'cool'. We had to prove that you can be authentic, modern and still sing in your mother tongue. Now kids are proud to do it.
DM: Your debut album - what can fans expect?
SS: Raw energy, Sinhala pride and real stories from our lives growing up in Colombo.
