Young Rap Nation: 5 Friends Who Rewrote the Rules of Sinhala Music

Five friends from Colombo 15 who bet everything on Sinhala rap - and won.

Young Rap Nation started as a group of five childhood friends from Colombo 15 who loved hip-hop but felt disconnected from the English-language rap scene.

They began freestyling in Sinhala at local events, posting clips on social media. Their unique sound - trap beats with Sinhala street poetry - quickly attracted attention.

When their 'Sinhala Rap Mashup Vol 1' crossed 92,000 downloads on Desawana Music in its first month, it sent shockwaves through the industry. Nobody believed Sinhala rap had that kind of audience.

Today they headline music festivals, collaborate with top artists and have inspired a generation of young Sri Lankans to express themselves in their mother tongue. 'We proved that you don't have to rap in English to be taken seriously,' says the group's founder.
