Bronze Medal for Black Horse of Asia

Champion Yupun Abeykoon won the bronze medal for Sri Lanka in the men's 100m race at the 22nd Commonwealth Games.

Yupun took to the track as the first Asian to compete in a men's 100m final at a Commonwealth Games.

Here, Ferdinand of Kenya who finished the event in 10.02 seconds won the gold medal, and Akani Simbine of South Africa who finished the event in 10.13 seconds won the silver medal.

Yupun missed the silver medal by 1 millisecond.
Accordingly, Yupun's finishing time was recorded as 10.14 seconds and Yupun won the bronze medal in that event.

It has been 24 years since a Sri Lankan athlete won a medal at the Commonwealth Games. In 1998, Sugath Thilakaratne managed to win a Commonwealth medal for Sri Lanka for the last time in an athletics event.

Yupun also joins the records as the fourth Sri Lankan athlete to win a medal in the 92-year history of the Commonwealth Games.
