Learn EQ and compression โ€” the two most important tools in music mixing. Practical tips for Sinhala music production.

EQ and compression are the foundation of every great mix. Here's how to use them effectively.

EQ Fundamentals

EQ (Equalizer) controls the balance of frequencies. Cut problematic frequencies rather than boosting โ€” it sounds more natural.

EQ for Sinhala Vocals

High-pass filter below 80Hz (removes rumble). Slight dip around 300-500Hz (reduces muddiness). Boost around 3kHz for presence. Air boost at 10kHz+ for shimmer.

Compression Basics

Compression controls dynamic range โ€” makes quiet parts louder and loud parts quieter. Key settings: Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release.

Vocal Compression Settings

Threshold: -18dB. Ratio: 3:1 to 4:1. Attack: 10ms. Release: 100ms. This gives a natural, controlled vocal sound.

Sidechain Compression

For modern Sinhala pop, sidechain the kick drum to compress the bass slightly. This creates the pumping effect that makes the mix feel energetic.

Final Mix Check

Always check your mix on multiple speakers โ€” phone speakers, car speakers and headphones. If it sounds good on all three, you're done.
